“My first impressions about the arrival to Craiova and my first days as a volunteer of the Shoe box

Good, it's already been two weeks since I arrived. At first I didn’t believe it; I had been selected to be part of a project (which attracted me a lot) in a country that caught my attention. I didn’t have to think too much, my life needed changes and to live new experiences. So I left the job I had (which didn´t make me happy and it wasn´t my life's work either ...) I bought the plane ticket (SVQ-BCN-BCN-OTP) and at 3 am on Wednesday 6, arrived at the apartment very tired, off course.

Upon waking up the views of a sixth floor in the city center awaited me; New views, new city and the conversations of my two new roommates and project workmates. As I said, I´ve been here for two weeks and I'm living it very intensely. As for the city, it is very clean and the people are very friendly. But I cannot leave behind and highlight one thing that has caught my attention when I came here and it´s a cultural aspect that can denote a somewhat sexist society. I´m talking about when a man comes to a meeting where there are men and women, he only shakes hands with men, if there is a woman he ignores them and greets the next man in the meeting. These are aspects that surprise me and I wanted to point out; surely in this time I will observe other many more cultural aspects that will call my attention.

Leaving behind this aspect, the coexistence with the other volunteers of other projects has been very positive; the union between cultures is something that I love. Upon arrival we were invited to dinner in the house where the others volunteers who participate in a different project are living.

In the office they gave us the necessary guidelines to start our work and for the moment the balance that I can make from my point of view is only positive because we have the help of young people who already have a lot of experience in the implementation and follow-up of projects with volunteers from different parts of the world.
